General Hunting Information

Reserving hunting dates:
The ElkQuest hunting season begins August 15th and runs through November 30th. Choice of specific dates are determined by the order of reservation-first reserved; first choice of dates. A 50% non-refundable deposit is required at the time of reservation. Please take note: many bulls, of all age groups, make up the herd. By mid-August, battles between bulls to establish this year's order of dominance have begun. Over time, the clashes become evermore aggressive. Oft-times, tines on the rack are broken off during these violent crashes. Thus, those desiring an undamaged antler set should certainly book their hunt as early as possible.

Our Premium Hunts - the Legacy, Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze are conducted in that order when possible. Each following hunt is given the option of any bull on the property, leaving the possibility of carry-over bulls from previous hunts. Example: a Platinum class bull may be available for a Silver hunt. Carry-over bulls are not available in the Harvest Hunt categories.

Accepted ways to hunt:
ElkQuest offers hunters the opportunity to take their animal by a wide variety of means. Rifle, handgun, black powder arms (both primitive and modern), bow, and crossbow are all acceptable. Rifles should be of min. .243 cal.; handguns at least equivalent to a 44 magnum.; black powder rifles of .50 cal or greater; bows of min. 50 pound draw weight; crossbows of min.100 pound draw weight. Most importantly shoot a weapon that you are familiar and comfortable with. [See FAQ section for sighting-in suggestions.]

Methodology of an ElkQuest hunt:
An experienced professional guides all ElkQuest hunts. Our guides know every inch of the ElkQuest property, plus the habits and inclinations of our bulls. They are accomplished elk buglers to help bring your bull within range. They will also field dress your animal and load it into your vehicle. Trophy care, as well as carcass transportation to processors may be arranged.

Accommodations
Our Premium Hunts include accommodations in one of Durango's finest hotels. For all other hunts, let us make all the arrangements for you. Lodging, meals, and transportation can be arranged for your convenience and comfort. Although ElkQuest does not have facilities on the property, we do partner with local businesses to provide you the place to call home while hunting with us.
