Capture Hunts

As an alternative to traditional, standard hunting, the thrills and chills of a bull capture hunt are unbelievable. Necessary for ElkQuest's management and research program certain chosen bulls are tranquilized and the antlers removed. Some of these bulls will be among the largest in North America and could score above 400 points SCI-some scoring above 500 points SCI! The rack is yours to keep!

A successful capture hunt requires exacting teamwork. These bulls are in the midst of rutting season and will be found oft-times bugling, tearing up trees, or challenging other bulls. Once you and your guide have located your desired bull, you will call or stalk to within 30 yards of him. Then, you use the tranquilizer rifle to shoot the bull with a special, pre-loaded dart. The drug takes effect in approximately 10 minutes. Your bull lies down and the work begins. Hair, blood, or other data samples may be collected. Photos of you and your bull are taken. The antlers are removed and a reversal drug is administered. In about 5 minutes your bull will be back on his feet and ready to join the gang again. You end up with an experience of a lifetime and a spectacular set of antlers that may be mounted in any of the traditional methods.

By participating in a capture you are helping us promote a very rare strain of elk that is resistant to Chronic Wasting Disease. We may collect vital data on your tranquilized bull. Often times the purpose of removing the antlers is to keep your animal from participating in the breeding program.

We ask that you make a donation to participate in the Capture Hunts which support the research efforts. The level of donation determines the category of the hunt. The donation levels are $2500, $5000 and $10,000. As the antlers are yours to keep and consider a "good received" for tax purposes, the value of the antlers must be deducted from the donated amount. Each contributor will receive a donation statement listing the value of the cut antler and the amount that is deductible for tax purposes.
